(Fort McMurray, AB – January 5, 2023) – The Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games Host Society is inviting Indigenous artists to submit art pieces to be featured in a temporary exhibit honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Two-Spirit+ peoples (MMIWG2S+) and Missing, Murdered & Exploited Indigenous Peoples (MMEIP).
Art submissions may be created or be pre-existing and may include a variety of mediums such as visual, textile, literary, craft, etc. The selected art pieces will be displayed at MacDonald Island Park in a temporary exhibit at the Arctic Winter Games during periods of high traffic. At the end of the temporary exhibit, the pieces will be respectfully moved to another location to be exhibited for a longer period.
“The exhibit intends to honour and remember Indigenous peoples lost to colonial violence, and to bring further awareness to the movements of MMIWG2S+ and MMEIP,” said Jes Croucher, Indigenous Arts Curator and co-chair of the Culture Committee. “Our stories, whether oral or visual, are the source of healing so it’s important we continue to share them.”
Priority selection will be given to local Indigenous artists living in or connected to the Wood Buffalo region. Art must be original and not under the copyright of another person. Participants are limited to one entry design.
The application deadline is January 17, 2023. The form can be found at awg2023.org/TRC. If you require support or have questions, please contact Jes Croucher at 780-747-3278. Cultural activations are presented by Athabasca Tribal Council.
