Call for entries: AWG searching for local musicians to create official theme song

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 8, 2021) – The Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games Host Society is looking for local musicians to help create the official theme song of the Games.

Up to six collaborators will be chosen to produce a song that is inclusive of different cultures and styles and represents the true meaning of the Arctic Winter Games.

“The creation and use of a theme song not only inspires and motivates participants, but it also adds to the total Games experience for participants, visitors and volunteers,” said Kim Rizzi, General Manager. “The Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games theme song will be a cultural celebration of our region and the event itself.”

The theme song contest is open to Indigenous drummers and singers, songwriters/lyricists, DJs with an original beat, instrumentalists of any kind and singers in English, Cree and Dene, who are 13 years old and up. Applicants must also live within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

“We have many talented artists in Wood Buffalo, and we look forward to collaborating with them to create the theme song,” said Rizzi. “This event is for our entire region and we want to involve our community as much as possible as we move closer to Games time in 2022.”

The deadline to send in a submission is January 29, 2021. The entry form and rules can be found at awg2022.org.

Individual or group winners will receive an honorarium and must be able to collaborate with each other and the Wood Buffalo 2022 Arctic Winter Games Theme Song Committee members.

The Host Society would like to recognize the efforts of the Games Theme Song Committee chaired by local volunteer, Rick Kirshner.

The Arctic Winter Games is an international biennial celebration of circumpolar sports and culture taking place from March 6-12, 2022. The Games will highlight the region and its culture through the spirit of sport to an international audience and visitors from around the world. The week-long event will see athletes from our own backyard along with international circumpolar North regions during their time to shine.
